Important Travel Reminders

The time is almost here to leave for Germany, but before you depart for the airport make sure you have all of your immigration needs taken care of! It is important to keep any immigration related paperwork on your person/in your carry-on luggage and ready for your arrival in Germany.

Two important reminders for best practices when traveling abroad:

1.     In order to board your international flight you will need your passport.  You should have copies of your passport elsewhere.  OGS recommends keeping a color copy of your passport and visa separately in your carry-on luggage.  You should also have access to a digital encrypted copy of your passport and visa online that can be obtained from any computer.  Additionally, you may want to leave a copy of your passport and visa with a parent or guardian, or whomever you trust and would call in an emergency. If your passport/visa is lost or stolen having a copy of such may help expedite getting a replacement.

2.    After you arrive at your study away site, you should register with your local Embassy or Consulate.  U.S. citizens can register with the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program     which will automatically alert the local U.S. Embassy or Consulate to your presence in country.  Non-U.S. citizens should register with the relevant home country Embassy or Consulate abroad

Information about Applying for your Residence Permit after Arrival

Those students who will be applying for their residence permit after arrival at the Foreigner’s Office in Berlin will receive information in the next few days about how best to prepare for this appointment. Please look out for an email from OGS. If you will be applying for a residence permit at the Foreigner’s Office and have not sent a copy of your appointment confirmation, please send that immediately to Rebecca.Lukowski@nyu.edu.

Reminder: Visa Upload

If you have already received your visa, OGS requires that you upload a copy using the Visa Upload.

If you are eligible and will be applying for your residence permit after arrival in Berlin, then you must upload proof of your appointment at the Foreigner’s Office in Berlin using the same Visa Upload.

It is imperative that you let us know if you are struggling in any way with applying for your visa as soon as possible, so that we can do our best to assist you while there is still time. Please contact us at ogs.outbound@nyu.edu or 212-998-4242 if this is the case.

Offices Closing for Winter Break

NYU’s Office of Global Programs and Office of Global Services, as well as most other departments around NYU, will be closed for the winter break starting at 4pm EST on Friday, December 23rd. We will reopen on Wednesday, January 4th at 9am EST.  Both the Office of Global Programs and the Office of Global Services will not be monitoring voicemail or emails during this time.

We understand that questions may come up while our office is closed – if so, please use the “Search” tool within this blog to see if we have covered it already (in many cases, we have!). This blog is meant to be your main resource of things to know and do regarding Berlin, and can continue to assist in answering your questions even when we are not available.

Happy New Year and Best Wishes this Holiday Season!

December Update: Appointments at the Foreigner’s Office in Berlin

If you are planning on applying for your visa after arrival in Berlin, you should be searching for an appointment at the Foreigner’s Office in Berlin. As a reminder, only students who hold a passport from United States, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea are eligible to apply for their visa after arrival. Once you have secured your appointment, please be sure to submit proof of your appointment via the Visa Upload.

Visa Status Survey & Visa Upload

Students will soon be receiving a mandatory Visa Status Survey from OGS, unless you have already informed us that you have obtained your visa or if we know that a visa is not required based on your citizenship. Please let us know us know where you are in the visa process by completing that survey as quickly as possible once you receive it. It is imperative that you let us know if you are struggling, need of assistance or are delayed in applying for your visa. If this is the case, please contact OGS immediately at ogs.outbound@nyu.edu or 212-998-4242.

If you have already received your visa, OGS requires that you upload a copy using the Visa Upload. If you have not received your visa yet, please indicate this on the Visa Status Survey and then upload a copy of your visa to us once you receive it. Students who are planning to apply for their residence permit directly after arriving in Berlin must upload a PDF copy of their appointment confirmation via the same Visa Upload.
